Buccaneers’ offense struggle in 25-11 loss to defending NFC champion Eagles

Jalen Hurts threw a touchdown, ran for another, and led the Eagles on a game-winning drive that lasted over nine minutes as Philadelphia remained undefeated with a 25-11 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.

The reigning NFC champions, who won their first eight games a year ago, are 3-0 for the first time in consecutive seasons since 1992-93.

Hurts is now 20-1 in his previous 21 regular-season games. He threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus to help the Eagles create a 13-3 halftime lead, and his 1-yard scoring run gave Philadelphia a 17-point lead early in the second half.

The Eagles lead 25-3 before Baker Mayfield’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Mike Evans put the Bucs in the end zone. With 9:22 remaining, a 2-point conversion cut Philadelphia’s lead to 14, but Hurts and the Eagles never let Tampa Bay get the ball back.

Hurts completed four of five passes and ran for a first down on the last drive.

The Buccaneers (2-1) lost for the first time with Mayfield at quarterback, turning the ball over twice after going turnover-free in their previous two games against Minnesota and Chicago. The Bucs’ usually dependable defense failed as well, allowing 201 yards running.

D’Andre Swift rushed for 130 yards on 16 attempts for Philadelphia a week after breaking his career high of 175 yards. Hurts completed 23 of 37 passes for 277 yards and two interceptions, and A.J. Brown ended with nine receptions for 131 yards for the Eagles, who are one of just three unbeaten NFL teams, along with Miami and San Francisco.

Beyond that, Mayfield completed 15 of 25 throws for 146 yards, one score, and one pick. Evans had five receptions, bringing his career total to 700.

For the halftime ceremony, the 92-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ronde Barber in the 2002 NFC title game in Philadelphia is possibly the most memorable play in Tampa Bay team history.

The former Buccaneers standout was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August and earned his Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence Monday night during halftime.
