Gas prices on Thanksgiving week might reach their lowest since 2021, AAA reports

The average gas price in the country has either dropped or remained steady for almost 60 days running, according to a statement released by AAA.

However, conditions improved on Monday when AAA released an updated estimate for the national average gas price, which came in at roughly $3.31 per gallon–nearly 10% less than the $3.67 average from the exact time last year.

Eleven states—Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina—had an average gas price of less than $3 as of Monday.

AAA spokesman Andrew Gross stated in a statement last week that drivers this Thanksgiving can expect cheaper gas prices, linking the decline to a combination of lower oil prices and a decline in the demand for gas.

By Thanksgiving, five more states may see gas prices under $3 per gallon, according to a recent analysis from a gas price-tracking company–gas demand may decline throughout the next one to two weeks, which could result in “potentially the lowest gas prices since 2021 by Christmas” in the United States.

30 million passengers are anticipated to go through airport security checkpoints between November 17 and November 28, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

A majority of Thanksgiving travelers are also anticipated to arrive at their destinations by car, according to AAA.

To get to their vacation destinations, it was estimated that 49.1 million drivers may be on the road–Thanksgiving is predicted to be the busiest travel season in memory.
