SPCA Tampa Bay is inviting the community to spread a little holiday cheer early by supporting shelter animals through its first-ever Christmas in July Donation Drive.

Residents can donate new toys, treats and enrichment items to help support the mental and behavioral well-being of animals in the shelter's care.

"No matter how small, every donation matters for us, and that's why we try to make it as easy as possible for people to get involved," said Corey Price, SPCA Tampa Bay's executive vice president and chief operating officer. "The real heroes are the people in the community who step up to support us."

The shelter has Amazon and Chewy wish lists featuring items its animals need most. Purchases made through the wish lists are shipped directly to the shelter.

Donations can also be dropped off at collection sites throughout Clearwater, Largo and St. Petersburg. A complete list of drop-off locations is available on the shelter's website.

"We are looking for durable toys for dogs because fluffy toys can get destroyed pretty fast," Price said. "For cats, we need treats and toys. We would also love more comfort items for our shy friends, like hiding houses or blankets, so they have a safe place to hide and build confidence because it can be overwhelming in a shelter."

The shelter is currently caring for more than 100 animals, with another 30 in foster homes. Many of those animals are kittens, making kitten toys, treats and supplies especially valuable.

Price said enrichment items such as puzzle toys and herding balls provide important mental stimulation for shelter animals.

"As much as we walk and play with the animals, they do spend a lot of time in kennels, and having toys to help keep their minds engaged is just as important," Price said. "It's great when you see a shy cat who needs a hiding spot finally get one or one of our herding dogs receive a new ball. It just feels really good."

Small animals, including rabbits and guinea pigs, also benefit from enrichment items that keep them mentally stimulated.

"Although we appreciate any donation and used toys can still be helpful, we would really love more new, unopened toys because they last longer and can be used right away," Price said.

In addition to donating supplies, residents can support the shelter by fostering or adopting an animal.

"Right now my favorite is Caesar, who is a bull-terrier mix," Price said. "He's a 5-year-old senior who is super sweet and friendly. He injured his leg a couple of weeks ago and had surgery. He's recovering in foster care and is available for adoption. He's the perfect senior guy."

This marks the first time SPCA Tampa Bay has hosted a Christmas in July donation drive. Through donations, Price said the community can make a meaningful difference for animals waiting to find permanent homes.
