A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputy was involved in a crash with a pedestrian who later died from his injuries on June 20.

According to HCSO, the crash happened around 10:20 p.m. near West Hillsborough Avenue and Ambassador Drive.

The deputy, identified as 35-year-old Jonathan Kennon, was driving an unmarked 2024 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound in the center lane of West Hillsborough Avenue when the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was crossing the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk, HCSO said.

After the crash, Kennon pulled over and assisted the pedestrian until emergency medical personnel arrived.

The pedestrian, identified as Dudane Anderson III, was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries. He was pronounced dead on June 21 around 12:45 p.m.

“The loss of life is always tragic. My deepest sympathies are with the entire Anderson family,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a press release. “This tragedy weighs heavily on our entire Sheriff’s Office. We are committed to supporting a thorough investigation.”

HCSO said Kennon has been with the agency for eight years and has no disciplinary or internal affairs history.

Kennon has been placed on administrative duty while the Florida Highway Patrol investigates the crash. His employment status will be determined after the investigation is complete, according to HCSO.
