TAMPA — A civilian without base access breached the perimeter at MacDill Air Force Base on Saturday afternoon and violently engaged security officers before being detained, according to a statement from the 6th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs Office.
The incident happened around 1 p.m. at the Dale Mabry Gate, the base’s primary entrance corridor along Dale Mabry Highway. Officials said the person did not have authorization to be on the installation when they crossed the perimeter.
Base security responded and the individual “violently engaged” officers before being taken into custody at the scene, the public affairs office said. Both the suspect and a security officer were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and transported for medical care. No additional injuries were reported.

By mid-afternoon, MacDill posted that the Dale Mabry Gate was closed to inbound and outbound traffic. The Bayshore Gate remained open for people who needed to enter or leave the base while the scene was locked down.

As of the latest updates, officials have not named the civilian, described a motive, or explained exactly how the person got past the perimeter barrier. The investigation remains open, and the public affairs office said more information will be released as it becomes available.
MacDill is home to U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command and sits on the Interbay Peninsula south of downtown Tampa. Perimeter breaches are rare enough that any forced entry at a staffed gate typically triggers an immediate security response, temporary traffic changes for base workers and visitors, and a formal inquiry into how the barrier was defeated.
