Downtown Tampa has a new place for sushi and a nightcap.

Nagi by SoHo Sushi opened Monday, Nov. 2, in the former GenX Tavern space at 103 E. Jackson St., the Tampa Bay Times reported. It comes from the people behind SoHo Sushi, which has been in South Tampa for more than 20 years.

What it is

Nagi calls itself a “modern izakaya,” a Japanese-style tavern built around small plates you share with the table. The menu has sushi, nigiri, sashimi, bento boxes and skewers.

The showpiece is a custom-built sushi cart. The chef rolls it to your table and makes an omakase meal (a chef's-choice tasting) right there.

The bar leans Japanese too, with Japanese whisky, house cocktails and its own ice program.

“Nagi isn't just a meal — it's a journey into the heart of Japanese hospitality, refined for the modern epicurean,” owner Dave Burton said in an email to the Times. His company, Burton Holdings, bought SoHo Sushi in 2022 and runs both restaurants.

Hours

Nagi is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday and for dinner on Saturday and Sunday. In late November it plans to add late-night hours Thursday through Saturday with Tampa DJ Ku.
