Metro Development Group unveiled plans for a lazy river during a spring break celebration at Sandal Key, marking a milestone in the company’s expansion into Hernando County.

Sandal Key is the first Lagoon community designed by Metro Development Group. This community is built on 872 acres along Florida’s Nature Coast and features about 3,000 homes, solar streetlights and UltraFi internet, according to the company’s website.

The property also includes 75-acres of seasonal wetlands with walking trails designed to connect residents with nature.

During the celebration, prospective homebuyers, neighbors and realtors got a first look at the community’s amenities and marked the public reveal of the lagoon. The lagoon will feature a lazy river, which the company said in a press release is the first of its kind in the region.

Lisa Gibbings, vice president of corporate affairs at Metro Development Group, said the company carefully considered its audience when introducing these amenities to the area.

“At Metro all our communities we try to feature health and wellness, encouraging people to get outdoors,” Gibbings said in a press release. “That's truly what it's about and it's the social spaces we take pride in.”

She said the company is also following current trends by adding pickleball courts and expanding outdoor recreational options for residents of all ages.

During the ceremony, the company revealed the plans for the lagoon’s lazy river, along with the pickleball courts , and had house tours for guests.

“Sandal Key represents an exciting step forward as Metro expands in Hernando County,” Gibbings said in a statement. “The lagoon and lazy river combine everything people love about Florida living, including water, sunshine, recreation and connection, in what is being called inland coastal living.”

Homebuyers who signed a contract at Sandal Key were eligible to receive a $3,000 gift card to Mirada Lagoon.

“Sandal Key is designed to bring neighbors together and provide families with unique experiences,” Gibbings said in a statement.

The development will be Hernando County’s first lagoon community, with homes starting in the high $200,000s.
