Salcines Park has officially reopened in West Tampa following a full-scale redesign that restores the popular neighborhood gathering space.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marks one of several downtown park improvements by the Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), aimed at enhancing public spaces across the city.

"Salcines Park, an important part of our history, has been beautifully renovated and is now ready for present and future generations to enjoy," CRA Board Chairman Luis Viera said. "The CRA continues to make life better, neighborhood by neighborhood."

The6,000-square-foot park, originally named in 1991, honors West Tampa civic leader Emiliano Salcines. Salcines moved to West Tampa in 1918, where he opened a department store and became known as the "Mayor of West Tampa."

The newly renovated park offers a refreshed space for residents and visitors, with the $1.4 million funded by the CRA.

At the heart of the park is the iconic blue-and-white mural, “Faces of West Tampa,” created by Tampa-based artists Michelle Sawyer and Tony Krol. The mural pays tribute to influential figures in the neighborhood’s history, including Rick Casares, Clara Frye, George Edgecomb, Robert W. Saunders Sr., Lou Piniella, Mr. and Mrs. Salcines, Carl Guggino, E.J. Salcines, Alton White, Leon Claxton, Jetie B. Wilds and Blas O'Halloran.

Upgrades in front of the mural include new pergolas to provide shade over tables, swinging benches, cafe-style tables and benches, interactive game board tables. improved fence to match the historical district's aesthetic. Additional enhancements include upgraded lighting for visibility and safety, new landscaping and fresh concrete throughout the park.

Salcines Park is one of several redevelopment efforts underway in West Tampa. The CRA is also planning improvements to Rey Park on North Howard Avenue and has conducted an alleyway study aimed at improving walkability and safety in the surrounding neighborhood.

With its renovations complete, Salcines Park once again offers a space where residents can gather, reflect and celebrate the rich history of West Tampa.
