Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has been recognized as a Center of Excellence in Women’s Integrated Surgical Health by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), becoming the second hospital in the world to earn this recognition.

The accreditation recognizes hospitals that demonstrate high standards in multiple women’s surgical specialties, including advanced procedures and patient care.

“A national recognition for gynecologic oncology speaks to the strength of our multidisciplinary teams in cancer and women’s care and affirms our focus on providing advanced academically driven care to women throughout the Tampa Bay region and beyond,” said Dr. Thomas Rutherford, deputy director of TGH Cancer Institute, in a statement.

To receive this accreditation, hospitals undergo a rigorous evaluation conducted by the SRC.

“SRC accreditation is a significant achievement for any hospital and TGH has demonstrated its unique leadership in women's health,” said Natalia Diaz, senior manager for SRC.

The evaluation focuses on three criteria: surgical volume, multidisciplinary expertise and standardized care.

This means hospitals must perform a high volume of qualifying procedures across several women’s health specialties. Hospitals must maintain a full range of consultative services for women’s health specialties. They must also demonstrate clinical pathways and operating procedures with consistent outcomes.

Diaz said SRC also evaluates the program's leadership, surgical techniques, surgical team and staff, patient education and staff education.

To qualify for this recognition, a hospital also has to qualify for four or more women’s health specialties. This includes minimally invasive gynecology, continence care for women, breast treatment, gynecologic surgical oncology, multidisciplinary or complex endometriosis care, robotic surgery and oncoplastic breast surgery.

TGH is the second in the world to achieve this accreditation by meeting four of the criteria by SRC.

“This integrated accreditation is a powerful affirmation of the collaboration and clinical excellence that defines women’s health care at Tampa General and USF,” said Dr. Anjali Kaimal, chief of the TGH Women’s Institute in a statement. “The rigorous on-site evaluation by SRC not only validated our high standards in surgical care, but also provided insights that will help us continue to elevate the patient experience.”

TGH qualified in complex endometriosis care, continence care for women, gynecological surgical oncology and minimally invasive gynecology.

“This accreditation signals their institutional commitment to excellence, along with their commitment to providing the highest level of care in women’s health,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC in a statement.

In 2025, TGH Women’s Institute received designation as a Center of Excellence in Complex Endometriosis Care and Minimally Invasive Gynecology,, according to a TGH press release.

TGH Women’s Institute is ranked Top 5 in the nation and highest ranked in Florida for obstetrics and gynecology by U.S. News and World Report for 2025-2026, according to the press release.

The only other hospital to achieve this accreditation in Women’s Integrated Surgical Health was Glen Cove Hospital in Glen Cove, New York. Diaz said this was the first hospital to receive this designation for demonstrating excellence across multiple women’s health specialties.

Diaz said SRC is seeing more interest from hospitals around the world for this accreditation and is looking forward to partnering with more hospitals.

During the ceremony the hospital received frame certificates for each section the hospital qualified for. This is a three year accreditation and TGH will have to reapply every three years.
