Tampa Bay Area to experience triple-digit heat index

With the heat index projected to hit 101 degrees in Tampa and as high as 110 in some inland locations on Wednesday, public safety authorities across the Bay Area are advising residents to exercise caution by remaining indoors, staying hydrated, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and loved ones.

Heat-related disease or even death is conceivable if safeguards are not taken, according to health experts. People who do not have access to air conditioning can seek refuge in public places such as libraries or shopping malls.

Moreover, heat-related illnesses and deaths, according to emergency responders, are mostly preventable with adequate planning, education, and action. People who work or spend time outside during the warmest portion of the day should exercise caution, with experts recommending rescheduling intensive activity to early morning or late evening wherever possible.

Anyone experiencing heat exhaustion should be relocated to a cool, shaded environment. It’s also important to understand the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, such as muscle cramps and lightheadedness.

Remember, heat stroke is a medical emergency. The triple-digit ‘feels like’ heat could linger over the weekend and into early next week before cooling rain arrives. If you think you or someone from your home needs assistance, please call 911 for help.
